Every Ingredient, Explained

Mindful Gut is designed to be the complete gut formula. It contains gut lining healers, prebiotics, probiotics, fibre, bloating and discomfort relievers, anti-stress herbs and medicinal mushrooms. It works on the gut brain axis to relieve stress which calms gut symptoms and visa versa a healthy gut also promotes good mental health and mood.

The ingredients are listed below:

L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is the first ingredient in our formula and is an amino acid that serves as a building block for proteins and is the main fuel source for the cells that build and maintain the gut wall lining. Although the body produces a lot of glutamine, under conditions of exercise and most importantly, stress, we deplete a lot of this vital amino acid and therefore we often need to supplement it, especially if we suffer from intestinal permeability, or leaky gut.

Inulin

Inulin is a soluble, prebiotic fibre that feed beneficial gut bacteria, like Bifidobacterium, which helps soften stools, prevents constipation and supports the gut lining.
It also increases mineral absorption, reduces inflammation, improves blood sugar control and aids weight management.

Marshmallow Root

When we talk about marshmallow, we are not speaking of the sweet treat that you toast over a campfire. Marshmallow root, or Althaea officinalis, is a plant used for years by both east and western herbalists.

Ginger

We included ginger in our Mindful Gut mix as it relieves many digestive symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating and gas. It is great for cases of IBS, reducing diarrhoea and frequent stools and has been shown to reduce nausea and helps with that “full-up” feeling.

Bacillus coagulans

Bacillis coagulans helps relieve IBS symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating, stool irregularity and abdominal pain. It also promotes better nutrient absorption, especially that of protein and carbohydrate and can help with lactose intolerance. Because it promotes lactic acid it also creates an environment in the gut which is harder for pathogenic bacteria to survive in and promotes colonies of beneficial bacteria and creates short chain fatty acids helping to maintain the integrity of the gut lining.

Bacillus subtilis

Bacillus subtilis reduces bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort by balancing the gut microbiome. It also helps maintain the gut lining by reducing leaky gut and soothing inflammation.

Bacillus clausii

Bacillus clausii reduces the time and severity of acute diarrhoea caused by bacteria and viral gastroenteritis and due to its resilience can also be taken alongside antibiotics. It also does not allow diarrhoea causing bacteria to take hold in the gut and produces antibacterial compounds which reduce harmful strains like Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile and Enterococcus faecium. It helps to heal the gut lining, and strengthen the intestinal wall and is anti-inflammatory for the gut and strengthens immunity, especially protective for respiratory health and against allergic rhinitis in children.

Lions Mane

Lions mane, or Hericium erinaceus, is a medicinal mushroom which we have picked due to it being especially good for both gut and brain health. It has been traditionally used to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression and irritability and contains compounds that help to grow, maintain and regenerate nerve cells in the brain potentially supporting memory, focus and improve mood and overall mental well being.
In addition to its incredible mind benefits, Lions mane has been shown to improve digestive health by containing compounds that increase the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and promoting the production of short chain fatty acids which help protect and heal the gut lining.

Reishi

Reishi, or Ganoderma lucidum, is also known as the “Mushroom of Immortality” due to its incredible health benefits. It contains over 300 bioactive compounds supporting the immune system, blood sugar regulation, reducing blood pressure in metabolic syndrome, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. We have picked reishi specifically in our mix thanks to its ability to help the body adapt to stress as well as reduce the negative effects that stress has on the body. It is also shown to improve sleep quality and duration.

Cocoa

This Amazonian superfood is enjoyed all over the world for its deliciousness but mixed with refined sugar and dairy compromises the health benefits that cacao has to offer. In its pure form, cacao is a wonderful heart tonic with clinical studies on over 66,000 people have shown that it reduces the risk of death due to heart disease. This is due to the antioxidant flavanols and magnesium which work together decreasing inflammation, reducing unhealthy cholesterol in the blood vessels, increasing circulation and improving the strength of the vessels themselves. It is infact one of the highest plant based forms of iron and magnesium and contains compounds which promote feelings of happiness and well-being including setotonin, tryptophan, tyrosine and phenylethylamine. Cacao has even been shown to increase beneficial gut bacteria and inhibit harmful bacteria in a similar way to prebiotics and probiotics. But before you break out that bar of Cadburys, dark chocolate has 120-150mg of beneficial polyphenols, while pure cacao has 5 times that and milk chocolate has almost none.

Monkfruit

Monkfruit (or Luo Han Guo) a southeast asian type of melon, was first cultivated by monks in the 13th century, which is how it got the name. It is highly regarded for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and provides a zero-calorie, zero-carbohydrate sweetness meaning that it gives no blood glucose or insulin spike rendering it safe for diabetics. Some studies show that mogroside V, the sweet compound, acts similarly to a prebiotic supporting beneficial gut bacteria and displaying antibacterial properties which combat bad yeast.

Coconut palm sugar

Unlike refined white sugar, coconut palm sugar is minimally processed and still contains many vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and potassium and inulin (see above) supporting gut health and slowing down glucose absorption. It also boasts a reduced glycemix index of 35 compared to white sugar’s 60 meaning that you dont get that blood sugar spike.
